Nuclear Consultant - Fuel Engineers

Nuclear Consultant - Fuel Engineers

About Vysus Group

Vysus Group provides independent nuclear safety, industrial safety, risk, and regulatory advisory services to clients involved in the nuclear fuel cycle, including fuel enrichment facilities, fuel-cycle infrastructure, and associated government programmes.

As fuel supply capacity scales to meet growing demand from operating fleets, new build programmes, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), advanced reactors, and High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) fuel cycles, enrichment facilities operate as highly regulated, safety-critical assets with complex interdependencies across nuclear safety, industrial safety, safeguards, security, and regulatory licensing frameworks.

This role supports clients by providing independent assurance, engineering, safety and risk integration, and licensing support for fuel enrichment facilities.

Role Overview

The Nuclear Consultant – Fuel Engineering specialises in fuel enrichment facility safety, licensing, fuel design interface, and risk, providing independent technical advisory and assurance services across the full facility lifecycle.

The role supports the design, licensing, modification, operation, and long-term management of nuclear fuel enrichment facilities, ensuring that nuclear safety, regulatory compliance, industrial safety, and risk considerations are fully integrated into facility design, safety analyses, licensing documentation, and operational programmes.

This is a consultative, assurance-focused role, working as a trusted independent advisor to facility owners, operators, Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors, and government organisations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide independent advisory support for nuclear fuel enrichment facilities regulated under NRC, DOE, and applicable international frameworks
  • Provide independent advisory and assurance support on fuel design concepts and technical bases relevant to fuel enrichment facilities
  • Review and assess fuel design assumptions, specifications, and analyses to confirm alignment with safety objectives, regulatory requirements, and facility constraints
  • Support fuel-related safety and licensing analyses, including integration into deterministic safety evaluations and risk-informed assessments
  • Advise on fuel-cycle safety interfaces, including enrichment limits, handling, storage, transport, and transition between fuel types or assay ranges
  • Contribute to fuel-related sections of licensing documentation, regulatory submissions and responses
  • Perform independent technical review and peer review of fuel design, safety analyses, and licensing documentation, supporting configuration control and change impact assessments

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Safety Engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • 5–20 years of experience supporting one or more of the following:
    • Fuel enrichment facilities
    • Nuclear fuel-cycle infrastructure
    • NRC- or DOE-regulated non-reactor nuclear facilities
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Fuel enrichment processes and fuel-cycle interfaces
    • Nuclear and industrial safety principles
    • U.S. nuclear regulatory and licensing frameworks
  • Experience using or reviewing U.S. regulatory-accepted nuclear analysis tools supporting fuel cycle and enrichment facility licensing, such as SCALE, MCNP, and CAP88, with familiarity in additional safety or consequence tools (e.g., RASCAL, RELAP5, or equivalent).

Desirable Experience

  • Experience supporting fuel enrichment licensing, modifications, or operations
  • Familiarity with:
    • Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) concepts
    • Criticality safety interfaces (oversight / integration role)
    • Chemical and industrial hazards associated with enrichment facilities
  • Experience working with regulators, government bodies, or national laboratories
  • Professional certifications (e.g. nuclear safety or risk-related credentials)
  • Valid driver’s licence, as travel to client sites is expected

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work within a global, multi-disciplinary safety and risk consultancy
  • Exposure to nuclear new build, SMRs, advanced reactors, and life-extension projects
  • A competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package
  • Flexible working arrangements, including hybrid and remote options
  • Strong emphasis on professional development, technical excellence, and thought leadership
